In europe, I believe they were produced in carbed versions for most of the production, at least through early 73. I am not aware of many carbed versions that ever shipped to the US, unless they were actually 69/70 Euro versions shipped in by private individuals prior to official start point of 1970 in the US. Ask Tuna...he would know. I have never seen a factory carbed version on this continet. Ray

So far my research has shown that here in the US, we never received a 411 or 412 with carbs. Like the 914, carbs were only for the European market. The US market didn't get the 411 until '70 or '71, so any '69s (which were all carb'd if memory serves me right) you find are imported by individuals.

Emissions standards were becoming stricter at this time and the handwriting was on the wall concerning carbs. Fuel injection promised more power, smoother running, less emissions, and better gas mileage.

So, if you find a stock carb'd 411 or 412 here in the US, you know the car was probably shipped over from Europe or another market.

Hello

The first 411 had a 68 dual 34 Solex setup similar to the buses. iN 70 the EFI was introduced with 80 HP.

A german automagazine did a Testdrivecomparsion and the 68 HP carb version was as strong as the EFI.
In 1974 VW skiped the D-Jetronic EFI and had two carbed versions for sale: The 75 or 85 HP versions both had a dual 40mm Solex setup. US cars got the new L-Jetronic.

Grüsse

I seem to recall VW stating that 5% of the last year or two? of the 412s had carbs and 4 speeds. I think it was like an entry level model or a way to get people to respond to price points.

If you mean buses with "type IV" engines, the answer is `72/`73 (1700) and `74 (1800)
