I used to run 914 steel wheels on my Bug, and my cousin commented that the 914 wheel was the only 5.5" steel wheel that would fit a KG without rubbing on the fenders. They do sit further in than say the Sport Beetle wheel which looks exactly the same. Given this, the 914 2.0l alloy will work well.

I have 5.5" Stock Chromies w/ 195/60-15's on them, but they are REALLY close to not fitting. VW911 on this board has some pics of a Ghia w/ 17" Porsche rims under stock fenders, it all has to do w/ the offset of the rim.

This pic shows just how close it is in the back (the rear is where you will have all the problems.

Travis,
What kind of clearance do you have to the inside of the tires from the springplates, inner fender area, etc. My wife is wanting a Ghia & she does not like any of the current aftermarket wheels for the aircooled VW such as the 8-spoke, rivera, etc. I'm thinking of redrilling the rotors/drums to the H20 VW 5x100mm pattern and find a nice 16"x6" wheel with more positive offset to tuck deeper within the fender and set of 195/50 tires at all 4 corners.
