I am doing a lot of work on my ghia today and when I pulled the carpets off of the tunnel i noticed two cable guides right below the shifter. One on each side. The passenger side has a broken cable in it but I am working by myself and cannot find its other half.Its a 73 ghia. I dont know if the year matters with the tunnel? anyone Know??? Thanks joe

Before I jump the gun here One more question. I have brake fluid leaking out of the tunnel. I was thinking it was the main (front to rear)line but I dont see where it goes into the tunnel. I am definately missing fluid out of my resiv.It is definately brake fluid comming out of the tunnel. Help!!! Thanks joe

Joe, those cables are for heat control. One, I can't remember which, controls heat off/on, the other heat back/front.
The front to rear brake line does not go thru the tunnel, but runs along side. The front enters the car at the pedals and exits under the back seat. If there's fluid in the tunnel, then your MC is probably leaking. There's double wall between the MC and pedals. Fluid will leak between the walls and escape into the tunnel.

i thought that the yellow handled levers were for that. this tunnel guide is 2 feet in front of that right below the shifter at the base of the tunnel.

I'll take a look and see if I can figure it out. I've got a pan that I opened the entire tunnel on, just to see what's in there.

Well, this weekend I looked. There are only lines forward of the shifter on my 68. Both on the driver side. There are fuel and clutch tube. Sorry I couldn't ID what you have.

Joe, it sounds like you are talking about the cables that actuate the foot heater vents at floor level outside of the seats, by the door sill. Later Ghias only. I can have a look at a '74 in my yard to better explain it for you if you like.

A/C head and John, I appreciate the replys but i dont think it is the answer. My floor vents near the rocker panels have a cable that that goes right in front of the doors with a lever. It is mounted right the to the front wheel wells. I am going to take a picture or two tonight when I get home from work. I just dont know how to get them on this forum. I am not great with computers. Its night time so the pics dident come out great. The guide tube is in between the the tunnel and the seat rails. The other pic is the lever that controlls the side ducts. In the last picture, below the gas flap release. What is that lever hooked up to? Mine was just attached in the stock location, but the cable went no where

that lever is controlling the floor vent right below the door. I do not know if is supposed to be like that. Thats why I took the pic. If you know the real way these vents are supposed to be hooked up let me know please. And if you know what those guide tubes in the tunnel are for, I would like to know.

The lever in your picture is not stock. The tubing that comes out of the tunnel on both sides is supposed to have cables from the left side lever (next to the emergency brake handle,possibly marked def/heat)going in a loop forward on the pan, and back to the floor vents.

thanks john, i am curious if there is a book or pamphlet showing this type of info. Does the stock way work good? I am curious why it was converted. I would like to put it back to the original way. It works lousy now. any info would help. thanks joe

You've got a real puzzler there! My 68 does not have to tubes comining out of the tunnel, but does have the levers on both sides, as shown in picture 4. Mine also are not connected and I wondered what they were for. Since this car is heatless (J-tubes) I never gave it much thought.

If you have an owners manual it should describe the operation of the floor vents, and what lever controls them.
The beetles switched to a cable operated floor vent in 73. The left tunnel lever would control the flow of air either to the floor or defroster vents.
On my 70 Ghia I have the levers under the dash to control the floor vents. What I am guessing here is that the previous owner switched over to an older Ghia style floor vent control when the original cable broke.
