Hi all,
I have never owned a bus before, just my superbeetle, but I have been dying to get one for quite some time. Today the opportunity came up for me to buy/ trade my hated Geo Metro to a guy for his 1969 Westy Camper. My question to you guys is, is this a good year? Anything special about 69? What would you pay for a 69 Westy with the following:
Walk through
All original camp equipment there except kid hammock.
Bed upolstry in great shape.
Rotted pop top canvas
minor rust/small fixable dents
fiberglass top could use paint
137,000 miles
Upgraded pistons cyls of as yet unknown size
window seals dry/cracked
original saphire radio
drivers side door cant be unlocked from outside
hubcaps missing
interior lights dont work
oil leak
missing original air cleaner assembly

I would say $1K to $1.5K. How is the rust under the Windsheild and the Battery area.You can upgrade to 71 spec brakes (check the Brake portioning valve, the leak and they are no longer avaible).Steve

The rust in the engine compartment is almost non existant, except for scratches from various mechanics over the years. The rust under the windshield is only bad on the passenger side, and its really just beginning to get bad on the inside of the window, you know, cornflakes, small hole. The driverside is perfect. Thanks for the response.

Oh and I'm glad to hear I could upgrade to 71 spec brakes. The guy claimed he just had new shoes put in but when I drove it stopping was at times like stopping a block of ice on a wet hillside. I probably should have mentioned that...

I've got a 1969 Westy and love it. The only "special" thing I can thing of about this year is the master cylinder for the brakes, as it was 1968-1969 only (I believe) and a new one is $120. I have the stock brakes on mine, and they're fine in my opinion. I've heard the poptop canvas can be tough to replace, but I've never done it.

Watch out for rust under the bottom of the windshield. Leads to leaks under the dash and can wreak havoc on the turn signals, etc.

Otherwise, it's a nice, simple machine. Stock engine was the 1600cc single port, so that won't be much of a change from your 71 Super Beetle. Removing the engine is almost trivial, as the rear valance comes off, and the engine can roll straight back. I can take the engine out of my 69 Westy in about 20-30 minutes.

Sounds familiar to my bus.. I can't unlock the drivers door from the outside either. Small world, i guess...

I say go for it!! You'll have lots of fun with it!! It's an excellent road trip vehicle..
