My heaterboxes are pretty well shot, so i believe thats the problem? can't afford new ones & can't find any in good shape around town. But I dont care about heat and hear of people putting in pipes that go from the engine right into the exhaust. The seem to sell these for the bettle engine but i have a bus with an 1800cc engine. any help or ideas would be sweet

Brian, they call them "J" tubes. There are a number of threads on the troubles of exhaust, but mostly performance issues. You're probably looking for a cheap solution.

I don't think you will find them for cheap, usually they are used when an engine builder wants a bigger pipe than stock, for performance purposes.
My suggestion is to find some bagged heater boxes at a wrecker that you can get for cheap, which have solid pipes. You may also find that if you remove and inspect yours, the problem is in installation, ie. gaskets etc, which can be fixed with your exhaust headers.
The heater pipe flap valves are under the van, you should be able to wire them closed, to keep the stink (and heat) out.
Look at putting in new gaskets or figuring out how to ensure the heat is off by going under the van. Those would be the cheap solutions.
