TDC sensor

I have a 73 westfalia camper fitted with an AS code 1600 engine and am having trouble setting the ignition timing. It should be set at 7.5BTDC, but the pulley on the crankcase has no marks at all, not even a TDC notch.
Can i use the TDC sensor connected to the front (flywheel end) of the engine to establish TDC? I know this was used by vw mechanics to find TDC so how can i connect it up to do the same?
