I'm sure it's been asked before, but what parts are needed and what is involved to put porsche brakes on the front of an early bay (1969).
I assume caliper mounts have to be made up - does anyone have pictures/drawings/dimensions of them...
Many Thanks
Ollie

Call Old Speed in California. They have a split bus kit and could possibly put it on a bay..?
The rear is easy since the drums can be drilled for the Porsche 5 pattern. Bus Boys should have these off the shelf.
... Granted if I were you I would just put on '78-79 front brakes from a bay and keep the rear drums. Then get a set of Mercedes wheels and machine them to fit. Still a great look for a bay.

The Old speed kit is for link pin buses to 1967. I have that kit for my 67. I guess no one really has a need to make disc brakes for bay windows since they come with them from 1971 up. All you need is the later model 1971 up disc brakes. Wolfgang sells adapters that change the bolt pattern back from 5x112 to either 5x205 or 5x130 so you can put Porsche alloys or wide 5 wheels back on.

I have 964 front calipers on my '74 single cab. The mounting holes in them need to be enlongated and then they fit right onto stock '73 and up disks/spindles. The Bus disks are much thinner than the 964 disks, but even without the disk between worn pads the piston s do not come out of their bores. The pads can be used until there is 2mm left on them safely. The Bus disks are not vented and this is no problem as long as you don't go and make frequent stops from 125mph to zero, say ten times in a row. My Bus does 100mph, I drive aggressively, and I haven't overheated them in 20.000 Km. Coincidently, they work great with the '73 and later baywindow master cylinder, booster and rear brakes in stock form. The rears tend to lock up slightly on cold mornings when I have to use them a little to get rid of rust and moisture. I've outbraked some ricers with these on my car. Oh .. one more thing, they squeal, and they are supposed to squeal as they do on a Porsche with original pads. Nice to know: Porsche will not reimburse any warranty claims based on brake squeal. If you get yourself some calipers you can easily determine how the mounting holes need to be enlongated. Do, or have it done, such, that the calipers bear well against the bolts. Use M14x1.5 bolts, check for lenghts, maybe 20mm maybe 25, I forgot. If you want pics of them drop me an email and I'll send them to you.
I run 16" Boxster wheels over them on H&R adaptors, but 15" may just fit I never tried. If you want to install late model Porsche wheels then you'll need spacers anyway, I would go with adaptors to get closer to your original trackwidth. Some Porsches came with spacers from the factory, and Porsche bolt circle spacers are available from Porsche dealers. Modern alloy Porsche calipers are available from the Porsche dealer from $175 to $350 each. Porsche calipers are not identical to standard Brembo calipers.
Hope it helps,
Brian

Oh .. I get about 10.000km out of a set of genuine Porsche pads (Textar). I use the 964 rear pads, they are a little softer. The pads are about $140 a set, I have to guess a little on that because I bought my last set in Holland.

"Porsche calipers are not identical to standard Brembo calipers."
That is true! Porsche are made spefically for the street where the Brembos are made for the track.
Do not run Brembos on the street.

If anyone is interested I have a set of early 944 calipers for sale.
Make me a reasonable offer and they are yours!
They work perfectly with the Old Speed kit. Old Speed lowers the price of the kit if you have components. For instance new rotors are much cheaper at www.pelicanpart.com

H&R is a German aftermarket brand. They make coil over suspensions and assorted parts for racing.

Just looking at the Old Speed site and they claim that the 944 front brake kit is good for 64-70 Type 2s.
"Photo shows the installation of Porsche front disc brakes on 1964 through 1970 Type II's. Available for sale as a kit, and can be installed in less than two hours." http://www.oldspeed.com/service.htm
I have a set of good used rotors and front calipers for this conversion if anyone is interested for $200 (or will trade for carbs). Heck of a deal, cleaning up the basement shop. All that is needed is hubs that Old Speed can provide.
