Bus 091 Transaxle Question

Post by vwbusman215 »

I have sent my engine to get rebuilt and that leaves me to focus some attention on the tranny. It functions fine but leaks like crazy and I don't want trans fluid all over my new motor. I bought the gasket/seal kit from bus depot but in my area there really isn't much of anyone that will touch it. Is something like replacing these gaskets and seals something the normal mechanical type guy could do or would it be better left to someone who has messed with it before. Its about three or four paper type gaskets and two or three seals in the kit. Doesn't look too difficult but I don't want to start yanking stuff apart and then mess something up. Has anyone done something like this before? My engine will be back in about a week to week and a half and I would like to get this done. If anyone can give me some input I appreciate it! Image

Thanks

Casey,You can fix that.Well allmost. You can
replace the gasket where the shifter comes out, just make shure the trans is in netual.
& the rest are seals, stub axle seals(2),
& input shaft seal(1).The only gskt you can't do is the 1 between the main case &
intermediate housing, oh you can do the bell
housing too. That should be all of them.
Good Luck, Denny Image Image Image

Bus 091 Transaxle Question

Thanks for the input Denny. I was reading Bentely last night. Some looks simple some looks tough. I am going to take a look at that stuff you said today and see if I want to tackle it or not. Mainly I guess I need to examine where exactly the tranny is leaking the most. I think it is mostly where the axles bolt up. That round seal in there I think is the problem on each side. Thanks again.

Be very careful to put everything back the way it came. If you need to remove the side adjuster rings...those aluminum rings with the seals on them, for the output shafts...mark them first. Watch out for the little shim ring under the seal that goes around the stub axles. Without those shims, the differential will wear quickly on the side gears and spyder pinions. If the seal between the transfer section and differential section is leaking, it may be worth finding out if thecase nuts have worked loose. Ray

Bus 091 Transaxle Question

Thanks for the input Ray. I was checking it out yesterday and every dang gasket and seal is leaking somewhere on it. I really don't want all that leakage to end up on my new rebuilt motor causing poor cooling. I don't know if its something I want to tackle or not. I have never busted open a tranny before and would hate to end up taking a bucket of parts to someone more qualified. I tried tracking down the only guy I know of in my city to mess with the VW stuff yesterday also to no avail. He is very elusive. I left a note on his door to see if he will call me back. That was my third time by his shop and nobody home. And on the same note if he doesn't spend a whole lot of time working in his shop I don't want to end up not getting my tranny back for a month or something. Its a toss up. If I take good notes and such when taking it apart is there any special tricks to reassembly that if I don't get right then I will mess everything up with one of these units?

Thanks
