rear motor mounts

Post by tarnx »

The T4 is longer and heavyer than the T1. It also was designed to use a rear mount. You need to get Joe Cali's book on the conversion. Most conversions use the stock cross member and use treaded rod to tie it to brackets made to bolt to the rear bumper brackets. The weight is trying to shove the front trans mount up through the package shelf using the framehorns as a pivot. A rear mount properly adjusted prevents that. I believe Gene Berg has a traction bar for the T1 which pretty much does the same thing. The threaded rod with stop nuts allows the torque to be transfersed to the body of the car instead of through the front trans mount. The T4 has alot more torque! and this is necessary. I haven't got this far on mine yet as I am still working on the d fanshrouds.

rear motor mounts

Post by Joseph »

The rear engine support is essential to good
powertrain control not because of the engine
weight (24-28lbs). The Gene Berg traction
bar puts a metal bar directly under the
engine to control the down force. Its a
crude and costly approach that will transmit
vibration back into the car. Why not use the
easy approach (and low cost too). The rear
Bus cross hanger is already set up to bolt
up to your engine with two rubber mounts
giving you five mounts to control your power
train silently without wearing a groove on
the bottom of your engine case.
Just modify the ends of the bar so it can be
bolted to the same bolt holes that hold the
rear bumper brackets to the body. This
method leaves your car body without extra
"holes", quiet and is easy on the nose cone.
Tranny straps are out.
