VW history?
I was wondering if anyone knew where and why VW chose an air cooled motor for their cars.I have heard a few theories but I would be interested in the actual history of VW's aircooled motor.

VW history?
To protect the car in cold weather. Garages were few in Germany of the 30's. * Found this tidbit of info in the book Small Wonder. A must read.

ease of maintenance nostly, but I believe the what solidified the aircooled idea was porsche's connection to a motorcycle manufacturer (zundap?).
a number of designs were played with ranging fron a radial 5 cyl pattern to a H4 pattern and eventually the flat 4 won out.
