Head swap. FI / Carb

Post by tony.p2 »

Guys, I have just pulled apart my engine and found head cracked (3&4 cyl side).
engine is 2ltr FI bus code GE008773.
I have been offered a 2ltr head in good condition for 35 UK pounds including delivery.
Only problem is that the head is most likely to have been off a carbed engine as we don't have many FI lumps in the UK.
If it is from a carb engine, will it be any good to me? Just thinking about extra sensors and gubbins a FI engine has.
(Sorry for terminology but this is my first engine job and completely new to me)

Make sure it has the FI temp sensor over #3 cyl...good price tho'!

I have a GE block too...they are Cali/smog motors.

How did you get it? Did you bring it from the states? I visited the UK quite often when I worked in Frankfurt.

I bought the bus recently. It was an Australian import. They used the same GE engines apparantly.
I dont think the head I have been offered will have the head temp sensor as it was more than likely of a t / carb bus.
(I have got a new cyl head temp sender)
What I was wondering was, if the head came from a carb engine, will it have a blanked off hole for the sensor to screw into or do I need to find a FI head.

i wouldn't worry so much about the sensors, this is easy to deal with. but a stock GE cased motor will have square exhaust ports. these will not bolt up to you exhaust and you cannot interchange the square port heads with any other kind.

Square exhaust ports? Do you mean where the heat exchangers bolt up?
Mine takes the heat exchangers with the stepped flange, (>1978) as opposed to the flat flange that bolts flush against the head (1978> )
How is the sensor easy to deal with punkinfair?

tony,

you need to tap a hole in the head to accept it. it is a m10 fine thread. the sensor goes in the the head just in front of the intake manifold on #3, and the hole is the same one that holds on the cylinder cover tin, only opened up to fit the sensor, so a non-fi head has the hole in the right place, you just need to drill and tap it to the right size. i think it is m10 x 1.0 but don't quote me on that.

Thanks Scot,
that's ggod news.
If that's the case I think I'll have it delivered and take the chance. At the price offered it's not too much risk eh?

tony,

tell me the numbers cast into your head (they are under the rocker shafts) and get the seller to give you the numbers on his head. it will be something like 022 101 351 with a letter after it. you want to make sure the new head has the same size valves as yours, i can look it up in a book or you can look it up here:
