Baywindow drivetrain in a Split?
I noticed a few posts about bug trans, into early bus. But would a bay tranny install easier. What would it take?

much more work to install. It can be done...just like anything else...but lots of work. The bug goes right in.
I'm gonna do the baywindow IRS setup with a bug IRS tranny. Should work good. I had considered the T4 tranny, but finally figured that the weight of the early bus is much less than a baywindow. So the smaller T1 tranny is plenty good. And with it being easier to install (bolt-on) I went ahead and decided to go that route.

OMG!!! Rex you gave up the bay tranny idea!
I have to agree the T1 box should be fine for our needs

I was hoping to use the type 4 engine without having to adapt the flywheel to a type 1 tranny. So I have to weigh which option will be more work.
thanks

type4 flywheel will work with a type1 tranny very easy, just need to have a pilot shaft bearing pressed into the type4 flywheel then you should be able to use a type1 clutch disk, and a 12v starter.
been done many times.
I have a type4 engine in my beetle, except I used a 911 tranny and 914 flywheel.

Yep, sure did. Got convinced the T1 tranny was strong enough. I guess the true test will be when I put it all together and give it the real world test.

only the 210mm and 215mm T-4 will clear in the T-1 trans. Then use the 1800cc bus pressure plate . Good luck. Bob Ingman
