Is there any way to tell if my thermostat is good before I start assembling my 1600 DP?

How do you test it?

Thanks

Usually if they fail, they expand quite a bit.

But if you want to test it, dip it in some boiling water, but be ready to pull it out when it starts expanding, you don't want to overexert the little guy.

Measure the overall length after its been in the fridge for a few minutes (although it should be fully contracted at room temp). Then put it in the oven set on warm to 200 degrees. Measure again, should be longer. Type 1 thermostats open at, I believe 65 degrees centigrade, which is about 150 degrees fahrenheit. When they fail, they stay at their fully expanded length.

I just tried the boiling water routine. The thermostat length didn't change at all. Must be shot I guess.

Dan,
That's why you pull it out of the water when it starts expanding. If you just let it stay in there and expand..........

I've also seen propane torches used to check them. Same as with boiling water, take the flame away when it starts expanding.

I tested mine with a propane torch and it unsoldered the ends!

Just put it in some hot water and it should expand.

I have seen 3 different heat ratings over the years. The new aftermarket one sitting in front in me from Gene Berg, p/n 111 119 159 A is a Wahler, made in Germany, and its 65 degrees C (150F). I have seen stock ones from the early 70's at 70C (160F) and a FI version 80C (176F).

I like the oven idea. Place it on a sheet and stick it in at 250 degrees. Don't expect immediate results. I recall having to wait almost 10 minutes but when its does reach temperature, it expands fairly quickly. If its out of the thermostat bracket, don't leave it in there after it starts to grow. The bracket would normally limit its expansion to approx 1/2".

Don't boil it. Use a hair drier and it should expand. If you still have it the motor connected to the flaps, use the drier and you can see the thermo/ flaps work.
