hey guys, im a regular at the new SBO! forums but i just bought a standard beetle today...
my accelerator pedal is feeling strange, its close to the floor, doesnt have much travel, doesnt return to its normal postition easily, and feels 'sticky' for lack of a better word
the accelerator cable IS NOT broken, as i drove it up and down the street today (bad brakes, im not going to drive too far)
it looks as though it was broken at one point, and repaired with a piece of wire (where the cable attaches to the pedal)
where should i begin to attack this?
im fairly volkswagen literate, but i just dont know what to do first.
i have pics, but im not sure how to post them
thanks!

John I would start with checking to see that (with the pedal all the way up where its suppost to be)there is no slack in your cable. If there is loosin it at the carb and pull the slack out with some pliers and retightin it. After that make sure the spring is on the carb and doing its job. Also check too see that the hinge part of the pedal is free of dirt and rust and works freely. Maybe check that while you have the cable loose from the carb. That is just a few thoughts on that. Maybe some of these other guys will know better. GOOD LUCK.

ok ive gone stupid for a second...
my accelerator pedal is not connecting to anything except the hinge on the bottom, therefore when i try to pull the pedal in the upright postion, it comes all the way up and flops down, the top of the pedal about 3 inches from the floorboard. is the pedal supposed to be connected to something else? i cant remember....??
thnx for the reply buggyman

correction
'the top of the pedal about 3 inches from the floorboard.'
the pedal stand at a 90 degree angle
sorry, im not sure what i was thinking:0

Check closely what was done here. Was it repaired with wire or did someone put wire on it to keep it in place? If it was repaired, I'd replace the cable. If not, do you really need the wire? Could it be binding on anything? Check carb spring. Check barrel nut at carb. Is it able to swivel? Check for binding where cable goes through fan shroud. Is the tube where it goes through the shroud OK?

i fixed it mostly....
the end of the accelerator cable was bent up and almost straightend, so the wire was helping it stay connected to the pedal lever thing.
also, the hinge at the bottom of the acceleraotr pedal was pushed out almost all the way, but it was rusted in there so i couldnt push it back in, even using a hammer
so i unbolted the clutch cable, unbolted the pedal cluster and pulled it out, hammered out the hinge and greased it and put it back in, then with a lot of trial and error, bolted the pedal cluster back up, which was a BITCH to do, i had to have my 9 year old brother pull on the clutch cable so it wouldnt pop off of the hook, and then i adjusted the clutch cable and the brake push rod. then i bent the end of the accelerator cable enough so that it would hold without popping out.
that was probably a lot more work than i had to do, but it feels better and i learned a lot (most importantly that i never want to do it again!!)
thanks for your help guys
