Timing
Maybe Im not the best person to answer, but I thought the timing marks apply to the cam and not the case. As far as I know, if you center the cam timing mark in between the timing marks on the crank, you should be correct. I just dont understand how or what timing marks have to do with a position on the case. I rebuilt my motor and just made sure to line up timing marks with the cam and my motor runs great. Hope this helps.

the crank timing gear has two dots on it and the cam gear has a dot in it, the single dot goes between the cam gear dots, buy a Haynes or Bentley, you put that gear in wrong you will have hell to pay.
it is very easy to do, and it does not line up with the case

I appreciate the help, the book I've been using "How to Rebuild your Volkswagen Air-cooled Engine" has you install the distributor first and set it to #1 TDC. Then "lower crank assembly while holding at #1 and #2 connecting rods." It also states that with the case parting line level with the floor the timing should be correct and to check that the rotor still points to the mark on the distibutor body and the crank gear stratdles the case parting line. I don't think it is possible to do all these things.
