In have a new/used block, it has ford 302 lifters in it, I have tried, and I have asked, and I have sworn at them! I know how to adjust lifters, been doing it all my life, but I'll be damn if we can get these adjusted right! I know when I'm at zero lash, but if I give it even 1/4 turn after zero, the motor kills after the oil press. comes up, and it does not run on all cyls fully. I have the motor out and I'm going to either sale the block or just put 302 solids in it. does anyone no how to get these right? when you turn over the motor to adjust each cyl. the lifters must be bleeding down, and that causes the wrong zero lash. does anyone have the answer, other than trashing them? I want my 2275 back!!! the temporary 1500 needs pedals to get out of it's own way.
Thanks

With the engine running, loosen/tighten until they start to tap. Then tighten until they just stop tapping, then tighten 1/4 turn.

Sorry, but I have this insane vision of someone trying to adjust the valves of a running T1. How the hell do you think one does that?

People have been doing it on Detroit iron since hydraulic lifters were invented by putting on clip-on deflectors to keep the hot oil from spraying everywhere, but I don't think anyone's come up with a setup for a Type I (pretty small market there). I guess the only way would be to jack one side up at a time, wear grubbies and a face shield and prepare for a mess.

Porsche changed to them around 1998, they knew a little more about the aircooled engine.... I have not built a single engine with them since 1997, I forgot how to use them on purpose!

I've never had hyd. lifters on a type 1. I have had then on V-8 Ford 302ci engines. That is how you adjust them on Fords. I guess I forgot about the position of the head on a type 1.

On a ford you are adjusting the tension on the rocker retention bolt, not the rocker it's self.
With our engines it would be impossible to do it this way, try to hold a 13mm and a screwdriver on a rocker arm...

Yea, I know. I'm one of 'em. But as you said, on a T1? Nope.

Hey Guy's, Thank's for you thought's on Hyd. lifters, you were kinder then what I said! I was not going to work on them again, I took them out last nite, before I read this tonite! everyone tell's you how good they are, but none of the people that told me they are the way to go! ever had them! want to buy them? just kidding, I'll just replace them with 302 solids.
I have a Hillborn fuel injected 392 Hemi w/2 stage nos, in Pro Street 27 T Coupe, a corvette fuel injection on a 400 s.b. chevy in a 57 chevy wagon, both which I built from the ground up, I have street rodded over the years 108 cars! and I can't adjust the Hyd. valves on a VW T1!!!!!! I think I'll go bury my head in the sand for awhile!
Remember! Steel is real, and don't crush!
Thanks People! Pat
