Zoom tube? That might do it.... I can't recall hearing whistling bugs though... but then again my exhaust never was stock.

Youre gonna have to buy new tailpipes to get a different sound. But its not gonna break the bank, theyre like $5 each or something. Try flaired tips, they give a beefier sound. Also, a zoom tube at $30 looks cool and gives a mellow sporty sound. But id just save some dough and buy a header/exhaust kit at $60-80. That setup will get rid of the whistle and give you some horsepower.

Ahhh the unique sound of the VW air-cooled engine in stock form with a real German exhaust. The whistling sound you are talking about is commonly refered to in the ACVW community as "Fweem". IMHO, if you have a stocker, a fweeming exhaust is the only way to go - maybe I'm a little nostalgic though. If you want to dump it, you can try replacement tail pipes as others have suggested. Also, the brazilian mufflers don't fweem, but (as with most aftermarket tailpipes) they don't last as long.

Yes, take your tailpipes off and replace them with the cheapo aftermarket straight tailpipes and Fweem will be heard no more

Look inside the t'pipe outlets of the stock muffler and you'll see a small tube inside one of them that is the terminus of the preheat system. The depth at which you install the tailpipe will affect how it interracts with the flow through and around the preheat tube and since not all mufflers are made the same there's not a depth that's best for every muffler so you may need to experiment a bit, but in general if it's whistling the tailpipe is in too far. There are 3 t'pipe lengths (long for -`67, short for `68-`72, and medium for `73-up) but most stores only stock the long and short ones...

personaly i think its a neat little sound i love it when i here another ACVW driving down the road with that distinct "Fweem" after it passes you no other cars do that!

fweem or not, nothing sounds quite like an ACVW (personally i like the sound of a baffled stinger on mine )
