oming home from work, my car lost all it's mid range power. It would idle a little rough then during acceleration, it would run like crap. If I gave it full throttle, it would kick in and run well until I reached cruising speed, then it would run rough again. After my house air conditioning compressor died ($2200) followed by the circulating fan the next day ($200) followed by the pool pump motor ($180), I was assuming the worse.

Turned out to be the linkage. I have the Berg linkage for the dual Kadrons but the spring clip that holds the linkage bar to the little ball on the carb was lost. Jake drilled a small hole and safety wired it. That's worked for a few months but it slipped off. The wire was still holding the bar so the car was still working but it was WAY out of sync with the other one. That's why it seemed to work OK at full throttle.

Anyway, anyone have one of those little spring clips they'd like to sell? I have a new set of linkage from lowbuged.com but it looks like a lot of work to hook up so I haven't gotten around to it yet. It's a shame to have to put a hold new linkage system on just because you're missing a little clip.

I thought the Berg was supposed to be the best linkage. Is the new one you have from lowbuggett.com supposed to be better or are you thinking of just putting it on until you get the clip for the Berg?

CHEAP SHOT. No linkage is at its best with parts missing.
A lot of American cars use the same type of clip on throttle and/or kickdown linkage - should be fairly easy to find one at a wrecking yard or well-stocked auto parts store.

The Berg linkage is supposed to be the best but I'm not all that happy with it. For one thing, it looks like a garage hack job. The top pivot is a bolt that sticks sideways into a hole. I had never seen it working and thought that Jake had jury-rigged it to get it to work. I later found out that that's the way it's supposed to look!

I found the exact same set at a local shop. It was a cheap Twain thing. I don't know if it's the same thing Berg sells or a cheap imitation. It was shrink wrapped so you couldn't just buy a clip. Since I was going to have to buy the whole set, I decided to try something else. I decided to go with A.J. Simms recommendation on linkage since he loves Kadrons. Then I decided to switch to fuel injection and didn't want to go to the effort of switching the linkage when I'd have to do it again latter anyway.

I didn't try buying just the clip from Berg. It's possible they might sell just that but since their sales literature seems so hostile, I didn't want to bother them unless I had other stuff to order.

Your right about thier sales literature coming of as hostile. It's been my experience that they are very decent when ordering something.

An interesting update. One of the reasons I never installed the linkage that I bought from A.J. Simms was that there were no good instructions. I had a hand written note about how you had to replace the arms that came with the kit with the ones from the Kadrons but it wasn't immediately obvious how it all went together and I didn't feel like I had the time to figure it all out. Well, the last issue of VW trends has step by step instructions on installing a Kadron linkage. Guess what. It's the same (SCAT) linkage that A.J. sells. I may just end up doing it anyway.
