I`m going to construct new side curtains for my Thing. Am considering using Lexan. Anyone know if this is a suitable material. What thickness would be right? Thanks Bob

You might like to check out www.cassidy-online.com/windows/windows.html. This gentleman used 1/10" X 4 X 6 sheet of acrylic. Don't know if this is what you are looking for, but at least it sounds like it might work.

Thats a good link. I`m familiar with it but good to have it here for others.
Have pretty well figured out what I`ll be doing with the windows. Only the foot will remain and 1/4" Lexan will be cut to fit and be bolted to the feet. I`m kinda off-roadish so originality is not real important with me.
I`m also using sheet alunimum to construct an under dash panel to house stereo and gauges. The visors will be sheet alunimum as well as nearly relining the entire interior with it. Oh yea and new Corbeau Baja SS seats w/harnesses ( http://www.corbeau.com/brochure/bajaultra-ss.shtml ).

Our Thing is more her Thing. It is one of the few cars she can work on herself and know what she is doing. Her main problem is not enough upper body strength when it comes to larger and more intense repairs.

I have to agree that simplicity is a big reason to own an air-cooled VW. With the current shop rates these days I could not afford to have my car worked on. The Thing however is somewhat unique to the VW family. I love mine and plan to have it til I drop.

I used Lexan, and it will do the job. It does scratch easily, and is kinda hard to cut (and near impossible to break). Mine are getting to where I want to replace them (after two years), and I will use acrylic this time, as it is cheaper and more scratch resistant (and I don't need them to be bulletproof.

Bob Witts windows were my inspiration at one time however I had decided to expand on his technique by using alunimum frames . I have established this theme in the vehicle so makes sense to stick with it.
There is now an scratch guard coating option available on Lexan that should render it more suitable to the job. Good luck. bob Ingman

I would use lexan over the acrylics I have seen, because of the acrylics brittleness. I own a sign shop and we use both products. Just be careful what you do with them to avoid scratches

Bob, have you decided what thickness you are planning to use yet? Your idea to make an aluminum frame should look really good.

LB I think 1/8" should be enough. This stuff is tough and with rigid frames "not to worry"

Yeah, a tint would be pretty sweet. Anything is an improvement over the stock windows. Cheap plastic crap.
