I dont remember where I saw it, but, I remember you recently posted somewhere that you may sell the Raby Type 4 seperately that is in your 181. I replied saying, "Okay, I will bite, how much for the engine" but I never heard back. Are you still considering this option?

Matt, Bob has a post on T-4rum saying he would like to get close to $3000 for the engine. Not a bad price for a DTM converted Raby assembled bolt in engine. You`ld be hard pressed to do one yourself for that.
I know it seems high to think of putting that much into a rebuild and conversion. I was told to expect to spend that much when I began my conversion. I thought to myself that is rediculas. I wont spend near that much. Guess what ? I did. The old type 1 thinking just doesnt allow for things like $200 ea head rebuilds and $80 gasket sets etc etc. Knowing what I know now Jakes engine is a buy. Just bolt it in and you`re converted, plain and simple. Good luck. Bob Ingman

Bob , the single side cover is one that has one removable side cover. Some VW transaxles have both side covers bolted(actually nutted)
and others have just one side removable. See the flanges where the CVs bolt up. Their shafts pass through the side covers. Good luck. Bob Ingman

Bob it is the single cover unit from what I can see. There are only nuts on the driver side. I have no idea what they are worth - But I aint gonna climb under this mouse turd covered - spider infested Thing and pull the trans for less than $100. ;-)

Let me know if I am outta line !

Is that r&p combo better for a type 4 conversion ? Not sure what I have in my good thing and was thinking of rebuilding the trans to better match the motor

Bob,when I did my T-4 conversion I did leave the 4.12:1 in place. It seems a good cross section of power and cruising. I was only able to drive on the interstate for a day before returning ro coastal Alaska but I can say that it hasd power down low and would get to 70 qiuckly in third gear. I would consider this a very good all-round trans. However due to conditions where i live I would prefere to go to 4.37 or 4.56. Good luck. Bob Ingman
