Transmission up grade

Thinking of rebuiding my transmissionin in my 74 thing or just getting a late model trans from a super beatle. I need a trans. that will handle city driving and the freeway at 75 MPH. Any suggestions on what trans. would do the job best. What gears?
Currently using a stock engine and thinking of up grading to a mild 1776.

Al you`re probably on the right track if you do a lot of highway driving ,eapecially when going to the larger engine. The gearing if the beetle is probably about right for you.Here is some more information with specifics. www.geocities.com/Baja/Dunes/9702/transtalk.html
