Thing axle ID?

Post by Class 11 streeter »

Hey Thingers
I have a pair of axles that *supposidly* came out from under a Thing. The "thing" is I want to use them in a dune buggy (Manx style) but I would like to identify them better.
They are about the same length as bug T1 axles, but they have "ribs" near the CV boots that seem to serve no purpose other than to be different than bug axles.
Do I have Thing axles? Anyone know?

The Thing axels have a longer spline on
them to allow the use of the type 2 CV joint.

Ok, now I am confused.

Things don't run the same CV's as the bus (Type 2), they run the same as the 924/944 (Type 4) CV's. The are however the same diameter, but the Type 4 have 1/8 thicker outer race. And have the same inner spline length as the bug (Type 1). The balls are clearly smaller as well. Yes, the inner race is pretty much the same as a bug, 1/4" thinner than the outer race.

The ribs seem to grip the boot better, to keep it from slipping during articulation (my guess).

An easy way to tell is to slide a CV joint on one. If a bus (type 4 also) will go on and still accept the keeper(snap ring) then it is a Thing axle. If however the bug CV joint will go on to only clear the keeper then it is a bug axle. Good luck. Bob Ingman

Length. I went and measured my factory Thing axles. They are 16 3/16" long. A length that I havent seen discussed prior to this. They are definitely not 16 1/4", and they are a smidge longer than 16 1/8".

Mattt what is the distance from the end of the axle to the ring groove? Wait, maybe I should rephrase that. What is the distance from the shoulder to the ring groove? Or what is the distance from the shoulder to the end of the axle? Good luck. Bob Ingman
