steering shaft diameter for 1973/181

does anyone know what the size of the shaft for type 181,1973 is? trying to buy new steering and adpt kit.heard it could be 21mm,or a taper. help!

78 Dsl I can`t tell you the diameter by number but to simplify I can tell you that the 73 Thing uses the same shaft as the beetle of corresponding year. The 74 is not the same and uses a larger diameter shaft. I double checked with the 181 facts and figures and parts interchange posted on page 2 of this forum. Also know this from the purchase of aftermarket steering wheel for my own 73 Thing.Same as bug. Good luck. Bob Ingman
