Thanks again Bob...I made it!
I am looking for front and rear bumper protectors for a '73-74 thing. The large square black-rubber type, NOT the upright style with chrome. Also want an original VW trailer hitch for same vehicle. All must be in like-new condition.
Gracias y prospero ano nuevo!

Bumper protectors and trailer hitch
John of Havasu
I bellieve that the THING trailer hitch you are asking about was the VWofA accessory hitch. This was built by Draw-Tite I believe, and you may still be able to get one from that source. It wasn't much of a hitch, 100 lbs. weight and I think it was only rated for 750 lbs. trailer weight. I saw one still in the box in Virginia about 10 years ago but that was the only new one I have ever seen.
If you want a "real" hitch you want to find or fabricate the German version seen primarily on the military cars. It attached to the torsion bar housing, the engine mount horns and, finally, the bumper for a total of 5 attaching points. This latter hitch will not work with 1974 mufflers or with any others that mount across the back of the engine. It was designed to work with the split muffler system only.
I know of a VWofA engineer that towed an Airstream trailer with his THING, so it can be done...
The bumper guards you are looking for are available from the usualy sources as reproductions.
