volks,
i am wondering if things had painted fasteners when new. in other words, were the screws that hold the hinges on to the body painted or not? same question for the rivets that hold the intake covers on a '74.

paint question
Hummm
I was thinking of doing an orange THING with avocado fastners, and vise-versa.
Or a Yellow with Black fastners, now that sounds cool.
I have never seen any Type-181 that didn't have body color fastners. However, in the few advertising pics I have with the air intake visible, they "appear" to be attached with natural Aluminum colored rivets. .
Actually there must have been some pre-painted fastners at the factory. It would have been difficult and expensive, for example, to paint the windshield frame on the car with the glass and hood in place.
Someone out there take a hinge off the body and tell us if it is body color or primer underneath. I'll bet it's body color, suggesting that the small parts were painted before assy. But I could be wrong again.

paint question
Scott I`m sure that Things were painted with fasteners in place so as to include them in the paint scheme. In other words the screws were the same color as the piece they attached. Good luck. Bob Ingman

paint question
jcmb,
the body is primer underneath the hinges. on my thing the intake rivets were probably not painted the body color, as i have a respray to white from orange, but the rivets have only white paint on them.
inconclusive at best.

all Safaris, including Things were painted ones the hinges were in place and adjusted; that's the reazon why whe you remove the hinges you find bare metal with the rust inhibidor. The only fasteners not painted with body color were the two screws on each windshield's frame hinges to the frames botton wich were zinc coated. Ribbets holdind the rear muffs were always natural aluminum color.
