I have seen the snouts cut off and filled in to duplicate the Thing shroud. Good luck. Bob Ingman

IF you are just wanting to remove the heater vents and close off the outlets there are rubber caps available that do just that. Check with your local VW supplier. They also have after-market shrouds that don't have the outlets, they are usually chromed.

I accidently installed a 73 fan housing on my 74 last month, but I don't think I want to pull the engine to get it off again.

Bob the 73 Thing shroud is the hot item. Full VW german quality and smooth Cal=Look. What a combo. You are going to have to pull yours if you want heat. Remember the 73 has a gas heater so no need for snouts. It was a one year one of a kind. Thus supply and demand makes the value go way up. I sold mine to David Campbell and bought a 914 Porsche bottom end for my conversion last year. With a DTM why would I need it again. Never looked back. Good luck. Bob Ingman

Well, let's see, it looks like I have two; one is an original 73 THING fan housing and it's currently living on my 74. I forgot to change it when I had the engine out a few months ago. In as much as I have to pull the engine to remove it I don't think you will see it on ebay real soon.

The other one is on my Meyers Manx SR2, but I think it is an aftermarket shroud.

I guess I will just have to tough it out without heat this winter. Today it was 84 and I was driving around with the top down...

But, if I do pull it off I'll let everyone know.

Racquetballs will fill the shroud holes perfectly.

Very few 1971's Safaris built in 1970 had 181 shrouds with air outlets covered with metal caps and welded with two spots each. A solution for your case could be using some motor block metalic caps (the ones that keep water from leaving the block on the sides) and apply some spot weldind

My fairly original 73 Thing has a shroud with snouts. The motor also has heat exchangers the motor number is AM 001971 and there are white stenciled letters/numbers on the front of the shroud that goes: MIL 157 506 Ideas? K-mann
