Pan Welding

Post by JB181 »

Getting ready to put my new pan halfs in. looking at the old spot welds they look to be about 1/4 to 1/2 apart all around the pan. Been looking on the web but can not find any info. Would it be all right to run a bead with my mig welder completely around the pan inside and outside. Or do they have to be spot welded for flexibilty?

Hello Runnig a long bead is not needed. I drilled a bunch of 3/16 hole 3/4 inches a so apart cranked up the heat and went to town, seamsealed when I was done as best to do what the Germans thought was enough . Besides you may have to replace that thin POS that you are putting in there someday.

Spot welding is great when you are trying to make a uniform welding. The space in between welds is not relevant; it just depends on how apart the floor pan is from the tunnel, the farer apart the closer the spots. If you use a torch it would heat the sheet metal to the point of making waves that would remain after welding is finish and harmmering is require; this doesn't happen with spot welding.

Pan welding is a lot of fun. It's been sometime since I have done any welding. For anyone who plans on doing take your time, and it will come out nice. Work on a section at a time and let in cool before moving on to the next section this keeps it from warping. I'am using a flux core, gas shield 110v welder.

When you mean flux, is that with or without gas? How is the welding going, and do you have any pics?

Just got the first pan half off today, and getting the other off tommorrow. Plus tunnel edge has to be cleaned real good before setting new pan in place.
