I have read that the KYB GR-2's are good replacements for the Thing. A list member from Topica had mentioned using the GR-2's on the front of the vehicle while using Gas Adjusts on the rear.

The Gas Adjusts are supposed to be very unforgiving and harsh riding from what I've heard. Does anyone have any experience with this set up?

Why not just run GR-2's all the way around?

Vehicle to have 205 65 15's and I will not be going off road. What's wrong with one of the cheaper FLAPS house brands like Monroe or Gabriel?

Finally, does the Thing take the stock Beetle/Karman Ghia size?

Hey... I have been running GR-2's on my '73 for about 5 years now. At first they were just a replacement for the original tired ones, and I drove my car across the USA and everywhere inbetween on them. They offered a nice ride.

THEN, I decided to lift my Thing up about three inches and set it up for driving on the sand dunes of Cape Cod - which they also perform nicely on. I have had five people, a cooler of beer, my dalmation & some other stuff (tm) loaded up while cruising over the dunes without any problems (of course, having only 5 pounds of air pressure in the tires takes up a lot of the bumps in that case)..

I wouldn't hesitate to put GR-2 on all four corners. (I can't remember if they are identical to that of a Beetle or not though).

This is very commonly discussed issue and one it seems that has no definitive answer. However it is common practice to use the GR2 front and Gas -Adjust rear. They are interchangable with bug of same year. Good luck. Bob Ingman
