VW's aircooled mini SUV. Great for riding in the country, or cruising the beach.

globe box lids are standard items for Safaris from 1975 to 1980. They also fit 1974 if you drill holes for the hinge bars on each side of the globe box opening just like the rest of your dash face plates. Any other type of hinges are reproductions.

I got mine from the Thingshop & really like it.
I sent one back from a fella that makes a cheaper version, you get what you pay for.

How rare are glovebox doors for a T181? What years or model had them?
I understand they are now repro'd, anyone know what they cost?

Rabbit globe box locks fit the original 181 globe box lid perfectly, including the plastic clip.

Pedro: Are you willing or able to colect up some of those Safari glove box doors and sell them to members of this forum? I plan to make one but would rather have one from a Safari. Thanks, K-mann

We got the glove box door with radio cutout from the Thing Shop for the same reason mentioned by other posters. It came with instruction and the Mrs. put the part on. Image
I would suggest to have it painted to match your interior before installing. Right now ours is black and really I think we may keep it just black because when the face of the stereo is removed you can't tell at a glance there is even a stereo installed. The plus is the glove box lock come with it and the Mrs. tends to leave her sethscope in the car and it then can be locked in the glove box.

I made a glove box cover out of 1/2" laquered red oak with a key lock and decorative brass hinges. Total cost was about $15. Very easy to install. I just don't think any cover will stop a determined thief but this keeps the honest people honest. Looks great, keeps all the registration, etc secured. Could easy be adapted for a stero access.

In case anyone cares... There is a "real" VW Thing glove box door and radio mount on ebay as we speak. Last I checked it was at about $42... check auction # 2409025822

When you say "real", you really mean after market. The real one has hinges on the sides like the one Pedro has discribed in a earlier post.

You are correct. It is a "real" Thing Shop glove door. I should have said that it is not a "home made" door. K=mann
