The same as any type one.
Here's a pic of the exhaust on my water boxer cased air cooled race engine:
We modified the flanges to a three bolt arrangement for better sealing.

Oh yah! Called T1 parts usage
Strong AL block, hydro lifters if you like them, T1 cams, T1 rods, and when setup right T1 heads (flow baby) and 94B P&Cs.
Easiest conversion that is relatively unknown. I cannot believe people would upright a T4 over the simplicity of the T5 as it uses T1 tinware with little modification.
When properly done a T4 upright is nice do not get me wring, but the $$$ is just a lot for usually a smaller engine. 2110 versus 1971/2056(big bore). Did I mention T1 heads, T1 heads, and T1 heads?

And T1 exhaust systems work as well, to answer the original question... No crazy BAS or whatever expensive exhaust. For the price of T4 custom exhaust I can build a whole motor!

Yea.. I always like to go for overkill, as a matter of fact here is a shot where you can see that I have the filter tops too!
