2.1 litre case limits

my friend just gave me a 2.1litre case with a crack in the top were #1 rod hit --are these cases easily as well as worth reparing-after a bit of reading i've been looking into using this case for a type 1 air cooled motor-question will type 1 bearings work in this case as well as what bore limits are there--if you can only run a 94 bore i just dont see how it is worth using this case as a starting point as there is many new aftermarket cases out there--is it that much cheaper too start with this case then buy a new aluminum type 1 case -some one enlighten me
