there is a link to a head replacement article on www.vanagon.com . Go to INFO then to Articles + Essays. Bentley has head torque as 1st stage 7 ft lbs, 2nd stage 30 ft lbs, 3rd stage 37 ft lbs, recheck final 37 ft lbs-- all bolts done in proper numbering sequence

Thank you.

I assume the tightening sequence to be the same as a T1?

(it is)

Wasser head replacement

Had a productive weekend, mostly OK>beautiful weather, and the "busagain" is UP. (heads are on/reassembled/drives)

Note to self... Don't let anyone else take apart anything you have to put together. Thhhhptppppt. This was an exception, as it was free.

Having worked on a vanagon for about 8-10 hours now, I have to say that VW did a LOT of things right on that thing, at least by 88... Nice layout (for maintenance) sensible ... 4 1/4 turn fasteners for the front grille, etc.

Of course it took me a moment or 2 to figure out where the AC controls are (look up...) Hurricane force ice cold air. Yeah.

The only thing that has me at this point is a little hunt at idle (look for vac leaks another day) and I couldn't for the life of me figure out why it wanted to idle at 2500 RPM...
looked around and it seemed to have an idle air regulator???--- said VDO...????

Yep. It's electrically disconnected now, and if anyone knows that cruise control system on an 88 (factory unit it seems) please feel free to speak up!

Oh, and 88 vanagons have the bloddy security on the radio, so don't take your battery out overnight to charge like this dummy.
(I see a CD changer in its future anyway)

Update-- he bloody thing IS an idle air control-er-stabilizer, the cruise works fine.

Fortunately she idles OK without it, just have to let it warm up before hitting the AC.

Anyone have a spare idle stabilizer control i could try out/
