howdy folks,
i got a 58 ghia with a split case tranny. i've heard that they have a different final drive ratio than the early bugs and that they are hard to rebuild. are eithere of these true? i've rebuilt other old tranys before and i have a basic manual that shows how but the special tools or tolerances may be out of my reach.

To the best of my knowledge there's no difference in the gearing between a Beetle and a `Ghia, the `Ghia's higher top speed was due to aerodynamics. There are both 4.375:1 and 4.43:1 ring & pinion ratios (Klingelnberg & late Gleason were 4.43, early Gleason was 4.375) but that's only a little over 1% difference. I could be wrong here, I have very limited split-box experience, but that's what I've heard.
