When I press hard on my brakes, I get a knocking sound that beats in time with the slowing of the car. I can feel a little throbbing in the pedal at the same time. I had them looked at and the mechanic said the brakes are fine. Any idea of what it could be?

If you get a throbbing or pulsing...you either have a warped rotor or a cracked wheel bearing. Think carefully about where the knocking may be coming from. A warped rotor sets up a vibration that can cause worn radius arm bushings to knock the diagonal arm against the inside of the "ears" where they mount, or show a worn strut bearing, or a worn idler bush. It can also be loose bolts rattleing on the control arm bushings....Oh...also check to see how tight the 3 bolts are that mount the bottom of the strut to the ball joint. Lastly...it could be a loose bolt at either end of the steering dampener. Ray
