Hi,

My name is Joe O'Brien
31 years old
Orlando, FL
1973 Squareback (T-3) project.
Purchased the car in June with a rust free body and nice paint.

I've been a '914 guy' since I was 18 and am currrently building a 1.7 T-4 engine for the T-3. When finished I plan to publish pictures and directions for others to learn from my experience.

Pictures available upon request.

My name is Tom Slider (tuna)
28 years old
I live in Redlands, CA, USA (which is about 10 minutes from where the original EMPI was located)
I host this website (Captain Panic is the webmaster) and I'm the webmaster of Type 4: Secrets Revealed.

I'm currently building three cars. The first one is my Bug. See the details at this address: http://www.tunacan.org/cars/69bug.shtml

The next car is my EMPI Imp dune buggy, which is my daily driver at the moment. The details are here: http://www.tunacan.org/cars/70imp.shtml

The final car is a project my dad and I are building together. It's a Manx look-alike: http://www.tunacan.org/cars/poudy.shtml

The first Type 4 engine I'm building is a 1911cc (96x66). It's basically a stock 1.8 engine, with the 96mm big bore p/c, Scat C25 camshaft, original 200mm flywheel. This engine will go into the Manx lookalike.

My next project engine will be a 2.6L+ (I haven't committed to any particular size yet). This one will use the best of the best stuff. PEFI, PEI, 50x40 heads with a lot of headwork, etc. This engine will find it's way into the Imp. Image

Another engine that is currently in the planning and engineering stages is an 1832cc. It uses a 1.7/1.8 crank with the 94mm pistons from a 2.0, connected by a Type 1 rod. It will be a demostration to all that cc for cc, the Type 4 can out perform a Type 1. ;-) I haven't decided what car this will go into.

The Bug will probably see quite a few different Type 4s. It will be my test bed for trying out new engine combinations.

Tim Troutman, 21, from San Luis Obispo, California, Materials Engineer in training: 1.5 yrs to go.

As a kid, I grew up riding motorbikes in the Anza Borrego desert. I also ended up rebuilding the bikes (the very beginning of my aircooled experience) time and again, but, as I got bigger, I broke several frames and they were a little harder to fix "right"

Time for something a little more stable, so I bought a Jeep, which I have been very happy with, both on the road and off. But the cars' performance was a little lacking in the sand. while fun, the front end acted like a big plow, and If you didn't keep speed would sink you for sure.

It was time to build a sand car...
Those of you familiar with Borrego, know that if you want to go into the state-park your vehicle has to be street-legal. so what I needed was a Manx (a street-legal quad).

I bought the car rather than built it to avoid smog trouble. It came with a poorly functioning 1200, which I planned to replace with a 1776, and eventually with a T-IV.

I was lucky to have a 914 land in my lap only 2 weeks after I bought the car. Thanks to Tom, I sucessfully mated the engine to the car, but... I have had trouble getting the engine to run right (it's tired), and the car is old... so it has it's problems. Between the two, the car sees the road less than a week every month.

As a student, funds are lacking, so the car has been wonderful for low-budget performance.

'64 Manx
914 2.0L
dual weber 40's
"modified" bursch exhaust
nice new chrome rims
My uncle George's lighted whip pole.
10" steerting wheel
914 seats

I am going to get a liscence plate frame soon, but am undecided between:

"Low Budget- High Hopes"

"The Off-roadster"

"Just another Porsche-powered golf cart"

My name's Jeff Mack. I'm 28 and I live in the Boston area. I work on WWII amphibious Trucks that do site seeing tours of Boston.

I currently own 2 VW's.
60 sunroof Beetle, which is in a state of complete restoration to be a Cal-looker. I'm still unsure of what the power plant will be.
My other is a 70 Ghia hardtop with a 2.oL 914 motor. It's been dropped and has riviara rims. the specs are as follows:

2.oL 914 case
2.oL Heads Ported and polished by MSHP
MSHP Cam
DTM fan shroud
75 amp Altenater
48IDA's on CB manifolds w/ CB linkage
FAT performance Exhaust
MSD6A w/ 009 Dis. and Pertronix Ignitor
Kennedy conversion flywheel w/ Stage II clutch assembly
Bone Stock Tranny(weak point)
Gene Berg Traction bar Urethane Mounts and Tranny strapps

This is a Daily driver and I put 5k on it yearly. I raced it twice last year and could only get 17.01. It spins the tires way too much.

I almost forgot. I've got a 2.7L Type IV I'm slowly working on. so far I got for it:

1.8 914 case
2.oL heads( got these for $50.oo a show)
MSHP 104mm Pistons w/ 6 stud setup

I need to get a 78mm crank for this thing
Any help or suggestions on what to put into this would be great. I have Ideas, but stuff like valve size and exhaust size are questions I need to answer.

As most of you probably know from all my posts here, I am building a 2.7L (103 x 80) type 4 for my 71 super. It has 2.0L heads (48x38) and I got some 48IDFs. I am also using the Oregon Performance DTM shroud. I am glad to see that people are enjoying my site here, I saw that there was a void on the internet, and I sought to fill it. Which I think we are.
Enjoy.

Dave Darling. 34 years old. Cockpit Graphics Programmer for NASA by day, Pelican Parts 914 Tech Support guy by night.

1974 914 2.0. Stock as a rock. Well, with the exception of SSI exchangers, a Bursch muffler, and a bigger oil pump. And a couple of extra gauges.

It's been dead for a few weeks (this time). I haven't made enough time to go out and troubleshoot it yet.

I'm Mike Webber, systems manager for Rocky Mountain Motorworks here in Colorado. I've got a '76 Westy which went nearly 250,000 miles before the original engine blew...not bad in my book. I've rebuilt it with a slight upgrade in parts trying to give it more life for everyday driving. I love the damn thing and which makes it my own little purgatory...all nine levels too. Anyway, I have always admired you guys and what you do so well...and envious too...so please, for the love of God keep answering my stupid questions...
