gas oder

Hello 
Awhile back in put a new sending unit in my tank,used the nylon washers
and the metal one. Something to do with grounding,well it didn't need it
should have been all nylon.Filled the tank yesterday smelled gas so I
replaced the washer but it soaked a spot on the carpet trunk liner.So anyone out there know a good way to get the smell out,want to save the
liner they ain't cheap,thanks
