Carpet install help

Post by auslander »

I have a carpet kit i want to install this weekend, where would i find a material similar to og tarboard( homedepot, carpetstore......). Besides the tarboard should i put anything else under the carpet? Should I use spray on glue or brush on, and which glue is best. Thanks

I would eliminate the tarboard, but I definitely would use carpet pad under there.

I would buy some of that 40lb carpet pad. It is cheap and it quiets the interior a lot better then the tarboard and you can cover everything up underneath the carpet.

Get some aluminum backed gutter repair tape (called Quick fix) from Home Depot! It is better than Dynamat and cheaper too! 25 feet by 6" roll for $15! Line your floors with a couple rolls of that stuff, then lay down some 1/4" HD Automotive grade foam! MAke sure it is the automotive grade (closed cell) so that it doens't absorb water!! That thick carpet padding will act like a sponge under your carpet... rust rust rust!

If you put down some POR-15 and have faith in it, shouldn't be a problem...although if you suffer from paranoia you could always put a space heater in your car if you spill a soda :)

Actually not tring to hijack this thread but what kind of carpet glue do people suggest? I saw some stuff at home depot called contact cement in the carpet section?

wine country ghia, 3M makes spray glue in 3 different strengths. The extra stength sells for about $12 a can at Home Depot. This stuff comes out of the can in a zig zag spraying motion and it sticks great. It will hold two pieces of wood together like nothing.
