Emision test?

Post by 73ghia »

:?: I have a 73 Ghia just over a year but never been to an emission test yet. I live in IL and wondering if any of us take our old air-cooled VW to the test. I currently took all of the emissions components out. Do I have to install them back in order to pass the test? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

TIA

Fortunately, here in Il, it's not required to be stock config. (Like someone here would know!) I don't think they even look. It just has to pass the "sniffer" tests.

Not everywhere in IL requires emission tests, but since you asked, I assume you live where they are required. Cars newer than 1981 get a dynomometer and/or on-board computer check, but the VW's we deal with on this forum just get an idle test. I am not sure if they look closer at the car if it flunks the idle test, but you do have to at least then get it repaired and retested.

Try this link, you might have to do a little digging but the info is there.

:D Thanks for your responses. So I guess I don?t have to install back the emissions control components like gas vapor canister and charcoal canister and other hoses.. I also vent my gas tank to the atmosphere underneath the car but still occasionally smell the gas fume. BTW, has anyone used the old-style TYPE-1 gas tank, the one with the long gas filler neck inside the hood? Does it need any modification to fit it in?
