Vanagon engine for T1 Conversion

Post by Joseph »

The Vanagon engine, serial number starting with "CV" has a modified breather tower.
If a low profile 911 fan and ring is used,
the tower must be machined (after the engine
is dismanteled). If a Type 1 Fan type
conversion is used, the tower must still be
machined flat to accept the Gen stand. The
engine should be dismanteled for that as well.
If the 911 fan is used, have the case
machined (you have to anyway regardless of the year case ). If a Type 1 fan is to be used in the conversion, switch to a '79 or '78 case if you want to retain the hydraulic
cam. If you want to go with a mechanical cam,
you can use any Type 4 case. Use '74-'75
cylinder heads and a Web cam #86 with dual
40mm webers.

Well, I'm assuming that you are talking about the 2.0L air cooled, Type 4 engine. Most people refer to the watercooled 1.9 and 2.1 engine as the Vanagon engine.

Other than the machining of the tower breather and using the original exhaust system, it is identical to the later Bus engines.

Tuna,
He did say 2.0L. The Vanagon used air cooled
engines to '83 (four years). I'm guessing
from the wasserboxer performance that there
are a lot more aircooled Vanagons on the
road now than watercooled wasserboxers Vanagons.

Does anyone know if the Vanagon engine can be used for this T1 conversion? I have a good motor and would like to use it. Or do I need to get a Bus/411 case? My goal is a mild 2.0l, Vanagons are 2.0l stock.
