Convert manual to auto?

Post by vwfreek »

After seeing how much work it would be to swap an auto trans into my '61 Baja Bug, I've decided to just buy an aircooled car that was available with an automatic. And I'd rather have a 411/412 instead of a Type 3. I'd like a 2 door fastback, but I've only seen those with manual trannys. How hard would it be to swap in an auto? I've got access to 2 412 automatic parts cars.

Also is $800 a reasonable price for a solid, running, driving '74 412 2 door?

Are you sure that you are looking at 412's? The 4 speeds are actually pretty rare. Maybe 2200 or so shipped. The auto is nice....but out of all the 4 speeds to have....the 412 is the best. Best gearing and best final drive. Very light and quick. DO NOT get rid of the 4 speed tranny even if you don't use it. Very hard to find. Yes...$800 is not bad. Yes the yare easy to convert. Bolts right up, but you have to have the shifter and cable and all the little parts. Before I would say one is solid....there isan awful lot to look at. Ray
