UH-OH! Newbie Questions

Post by Air-Cooled Head »

I was floored by a slammed 181 at TRS Funfest last weekend,(http://www.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/inde ... +89833.jpgAnd that's not even a good pic!) and am seriously considering one for myself. I currently have a Square & a KG, (http://www.geocities.com/aircooledhead/index1.html) so I'm pretty familiar w/ VWs, but have no Thing knowledge/experience. I browsed all the posts here, this morning, but didn't find out what I need to know before looking further. My newbie questions:

What should I walk away from?
I'd walk away from a KG w/ channel rot, or any car w/ framehead damage. What's the Thing, thing that is reason for immediate rejection?

The owner of the Thing pictured said parts are harder to find and more expensive than T3 parts. Is that true? Which parts? What wear items are NLA?

I know the typical rust areas on Bugs, KGs, but what are the Things typical rust areas, and which are most difficult to repair/replace?

That should get me started. Thanks!
Bob Ingram et.al., Thanks for the links. I know I've got a lot of research ahead.

Reject a car based on the price, amount of work to restore and your abilities to restore.

My first thing was 1974 fully restored except the engine. It ran and drove fine. I paid a fair price for it.

My '73 needs a bunch of work, engine included. But I paid a low price and I can fix everything. Not wrecked but it does have fire damage.

That's the only answer I can get? This would be my 10th VW, so I'm down with that advice.
I just want to know that "Thing speicific" things to look out for.

Here is a nice Thing being sold by our Friend Bob Ingman for $2750. It is located in VT and ready to drive away.
