Back to tires

Post by waynek »

Hi all,
I've asked the tire question before and got a bit confused.Been
driving my 74 Thing for two weeks now and it's working great and
now I need to deal with the tire issue.I have totally rebuilt the front
end starting with a new center beam to ball joints, tie rod ends etc.
The car has 14" bias ply tires on it and boy does it handle bad.I set
the front end up with an 1/8 inch toe in and now I've got to replace
these tires. Has anyone had any issues with putting 205/75 x 14" or possibly 215/75 x 14" mud & snow or AT tires on a stock Thing.I have the original steel rims.
I assume there is a need to measure the diameter of the tires???
A further note the car has new gas-adjust shocks and I know I
should change the front one,but I'd like to replace tires first.

Thanks, Wayne

wayne - i've got kelly metric 205/75's on my 14" stock rims. They handle the road very well, but I'd be skeptical about going any bigger. Clearance is pretty good, but the bigger (and wider) you go, the more difficulty you'll have maneuvering in tight spaces (parking spots, garages, etc.).
