412 with carbs running rich

having had fuel injection all these years on my other type fours I'm a bit unsure how to adjust the carbs on my 412. The plugs are black, so I know the mix is too rich. I located what I think are the air-mixture screws; my question is, which way to turn it to make it leaner - clockwise and in, or counterclockwise and out?

I'm an FI man myself, but in general for most carbs....IN is richer...out is leaner. What kind of carbs? Ray

Hi Ray - always great to hear from you hear. The carbs are Weber 34 IDF, and of course they aren't stock but were installed by the guy I bought the car from last year. My 412 doesn't run as smoothly as my fuel-injected 411, but then it doesn't give me all the worries that FI does either. Much simpler system - and probably a better one now that parts and mechanics are so scarce!

Hmmm, on my Progressive, in is leaner out is richer ...... Easy enough to tell. Turn them in all the way until they seat, and then try and start the motor, if nothing, then they're definately lean !!!

Just write down how many turns you correently have them set at so you can work back to square one if you get lost ....
