Oil Pump Question?

Post by vwbill »

Hey, how hard should it be to turn the oil pump via the lock shaft?
I tried turning it by hand and it doesnt move! I had to hit the pump case with my mallet pretty hard to get it loose from the case. Thanks Bill

By the lock shaft...do you mean the shaft with the tang that plugs into the cam slot? It should turn with two fingers. Ray

Oil Pump Question

Post by vwbill »

Hey Ray, how are you doing and thanks for the reply!! Yes the shaft that goes into the cam shaft. It should turn easy by hand? It doesnt! I sprayed the passages with wd40 to try and clean it out. I guess I need to take it apart, damn!! Could I have messed it up by hitting the case?
Thanks Bill

Its most likely not serious. The driven shaft is pressed into the gear. It has a lttle bit of clearance at the end of the shaft so the shaft does not come into contact with the pump body...and lock up the shaft. When you take it apart...you will probably find that the "bump" caused the shaft to bottom out. You can put about a .030 shim under the shaft...a thin washer will do, place the bottom of the gear and the washer on an anvil...and tap the gear back down the shaft with a soft face mallet. I would then carefully peen or distort the gear bore slightly so it cannot happen by itself again....but then carefully polish any burrs from the bottom gear face. Good luck! Ray

oil pump Question

Post by vwbill »

Hey Ray pulled the pump apart and found out why you shouldnt hit the oil pump case on the bottom gear area to get it to break loose from the engine case!!!! It dented the bottom gear cut out on the inside about a 1/8 "!! That made the gear hit on the inside and lockup! I drummeled the inside to cut the dent out but I'm worried the case is thin now there!
It spins now! Yeah! Do you think I should get another case(021115109A), is it available? What a bone head move hitting the case! Well thanks for all the help! Bill

Get a schadeck type 1 oil pump..check Berg or aircooled.net. Then clearance the pump. The new type 4 pumps are not really available. Or you can use a melling pump. The shadeck pump should be used with a pressure relief cover from what I have heard...and it would be better to full flow the case. as long as the dent in the case is not overlapping into the gear teeth area...it may not be a problem. Oil Pump Question

Post by vwbill »

Hey Ray, I got a Melling(HD) type 1 pump. My parts guy recommended it.
Man is there a weight difference! I think I'll use it for now and hope to get a good used old style one. Can you tell me what measurement I need to make? How do you adjust clearances? It said to check the crackshaft, connecting rod, oil pan? Thanks for all the help! Bill
