Sounds like you new "mechanic" is worse than the first. Lose em quick, or I think you'll regret it.
Just do it yourself. Youll be happiest with it then. There are ways to educate yourself. Its not that hard. Sack up, and do it.

I have a purple VW manual from Kragen Auto Parts(dont remember who prints it) for a Bug. It tells you everything you need to know about VW Type 1/181.
You realize the VW engine is held in place by 4 studs/bolts? After that, fuel, wiring(5 wires), exhaust.

I wish you were in Louisiana, I am doing all of my own Thing work. My friend has a shop to press the ball joints. I am replacing the boots on my axles and all the tie rod ends. I hate that shimmmy at 45mph.
This mechanic you have sounds like a real looser.

Yanno.. As being a mechanic on the side for others, that dont want to mess with things themselves.. If someone wants something done, (Like installing the berg dipstick).. You do it.. If the mechanic is that short sighted, that he wont mess with other stuff, he is probably just not wanting to mess with stuff he doesnt understand. I'd stay away from the guy..

Capn Skully I hate that shimmy at 45. Hate to tell you but this does sound like wheel balance.
Shimmy at a certain speed= wheel balance.

Nthang, didn't see your car in Irving yesterday so you might have it at a different place. I had the mechanics from hell put my ball joints in upside down (like a bug) here in Cowtown and swear it was supposed to sit that low. Try the Bugstop in Arlington, if you can get it that far, he may be more receptive to your experimentation.

I also have a broken tie rod end, on the end that shimmys. There just isn't enough time in the day to fix everything. It shimmys from 45 up to 65 and then stops.
