5.5" Wheels, What tire size?

Post by jeffdt »

I just received my 5.5" chromies, what size tires will work well on a stock, non lowered, Ghia. I don't want any tire rubbing problems. Should they be wider in rear, or same all around?

Thanks,
Jeff

What's the backspace on the new rims? There are quite a few tire sizes which are legit on a 5½" rim, most of the time how wide you can go will be determined by how far out the outer sidewall will end up.
195/60-15 is probable (~7-2/3" wide at the sidewall, ~24.2" tall, roughly 5" shorter than stock).

Thanks Marc,

What do you mean by "5 inches shorter than stock". Do you mean 5" less in outer diameter?

Thanks Again,
Jeff

My attention was drawn away while at work today, meant to say 5% shorter-than-stock.

5.5 Chromies have 35mm backspace. Check out www.tirerack.com for info on the science of wheels and tires. Ghias sometimes are not exact in the relation between face of hub and inside of fender. Take measurements of what you have now and figure what you can do. IMO 185 is a nice coprimise between wide, clearance, and tire roll.

I run a 185/65r15 that fits real nice w/no rubbing at all. Fit is pretty tight though. Hope this helps.

Well I went with 195/60 all around. Great up front, problem in rear. The driver side rear rubs, I need about 5 mm to get clearance from fender flange. Is there a way to adjust rear body height, the car seems kind of low in the left rear. Crommies look great.

Thanks, Jeff
