follow up to below, repairing an air intake boot

Post by steve_1125 »

I have been unable to find the boot that goes in my 74 412

PART# is 022.129.971.H, 10 1/2 " Length, 2 3/8" diameter openings on either side, 2 fittings 1-13/16" and 1-9/16" diameters.

I am going to repair my existing one for now (may try fabbing the Vanagon boot at a later time). VW Bill indicated he used epoxy. Is that the best way to repair a tear in the rubber boot? Any other suggestions? BTW, if anyone has a lead on the above part, please let me know! thanks!

I repaired cracks in the boots for both of my 412s using RTV silicone adhesive, and it has held up great for around 3 years now--the joints have stayed flexible and the adhesive has not come loose. I would try that before going to an epoxy. Be sure you get that boot plenty clean first.

Boot question

Post by vwbill »

Hey, I found a old email from a guy name Charles Navarro, email
c-navarro@nwu.edu. He had a boot but was in the same shape as mine.
You could try him to see. He was really nice about looking for goodies.
Did you try www.thesamba.com and ebay? If you do a vw412 search sometimes if you email those people they have other stuff. There's a guy Paul ,paul@jbbugs.com he bought a vw shop and had alot of 412 stuff.
Good luck! I'll bet the silicone would be better because it would be flexible. Wahoo, Bill
