Shift rod removal

Gentlemen:

Today I started to r & r my shift rod bushing and coupler. Everything came apart relatively easily, but the shift rod will not clear the lip on the tunnel at the inspection plate side (front of car). It is almost as if the cover should have been placed about 3" lower than it is.

I know the metal gas line shares this tunnel and I do not want to damage it by trying to pry upwards on the shift rod.

Has anyone ever had this problem?

Thanks

Remove the cover plate. Use a flashlight to locate the rod. Reach inside and grab hold of it and remove it. Sometimes the bushing and rod have been together so long that it takes a pair of plier to inch it out at the bushing mount location. I have just recently done a good number of bushing replacements. As a result I can guide you through nearly any trouble you find. Pmail me with specific questions and I will help to my fullest ability. K-mann

Thanks guys. I've read Glenn's article, but it doesn't really address my problem. Some guys on the type 1 forum suggested turning the rod so that the cup is facing downward. I'll try that again, but I believe I've already done that and been there.

Our Things front bumper also precludes a good view into the tunnel. I guess it may have to come off to complete this job.

Okay, I took off the front bumper and it made all the difference in the world. I could actually see something. It seems with my vehicle, the way to get the rod clear involved pushing it back into the tunnel and then letting it ride over the fuel line.

Thanks for the help.
