Tranny main shaft clip placement???

Post by vwbill »

Hey I'm trying to put back in the main shaft in the tranny and cant figure out if the "c" clip goes inside the shaft tube or just on the outside edge of the shaft tube area? The shaft makes a solid thud sound when I slide it in and out of the tranny so I think its going all the way in but I cant see any cut out for a "c" clip in the shaft area where the splines are. Its been so long I cant remember!! Thanks Bill

Take a look at the hub inside of the access hole in the back of the tranny. It is pressed into the center of the big ball bearing. It has a recess lip or ledge just outside of the splines. The C clip fits into that area. What is really happening, is that the angled cone shaped chamfer at the back of the main shaft spreads the clip a little bit. The nut comes down on top and keeps it spread. When its installed, it should look like the nut is flush on top of the hub...with the C clip barely being visible. Ray

main shaft "c" clip

Post by vwbill »

Hey Ray, thanks for the reply!! How do I know if the shaft is going all the way in? When I look in the hole with the shaft pushed in as far as it will go I dont see anywhere for the "c" clip to go back there. The shaft goes back and only about 1/2" of the threads extend from the front of the splined area. It must be going into the clutch disc or it would stick out, right? So are you saying I should put the clip inthe spline area and tighten the nut to get it back to the groove? Thanks Bill :?

Thats pretty much it. Pull out the shaft for a minute and place the c clip into the groove/recess in the end of the hub. You will notice that the hub has a a very slight lip milled in it that will hold onto the clip...but withouty the shaft and nut, the clip will seem loose in the recess. The shaft itself, is actually capable of slipping in too far. When its in the right place, the edge of the splines on the shaft will be flush with the splines in the hub. If you push the shaf in about an 1/8" too far, then install the clip and nut, when you tighten the nut, it will pull the shaft back out to fit flush up against the clip..while its spreading the clip outward to fit tight in the recess. Make sure the clip does not easily pop out of the groove. I so, the groove is getting worn. You can fix it by carefully peening a couple spots around the edge of the groove to make a little more lip. Just don't make it too tight or the clip may not fit. Ray

Hey Ray think I got it? I looked at the shaft and it kinda makes sense now
and I can see the spline area should match the shaft splines not go in all the way. Its weird that the clip goes in the outter edge of the shaft tube but I guess that tapper wedges it all together. How tight should the nut be tighten? I put it at 18lbs. I thought something was wrong when it kept moving and figured out it needed to be in gear! LOL! Thanks again greatly!! Wahoo Bill p.s. maybe she'll start?! LOL!
