4th gear

Post by Bruce2 »

An AV T181 trans will have a 3.78 1st, 2.06 2nd, and a 1.26 3rd. What's 4th? .89?
Do T181s have coarse tooth 3rd and 4th or fine tooth gears?

Bruce I am posting this information from out Facts and Figures and Parts Interchange thread.
The AV transaxle 181 300 044F has a 4.12 R&P.
1st gear-3.78
2nd gear-2.06
3rd gear-1.26
4th gear-.93
I dont know about the teeth but I know a couple of people that should. I`ll check with them and get back with the results. Good luck. Bob Ingman

Bruce I checked with Eric DeBord. http://www.geocities.com/Baja/Dunes/9702/transtalk.html
He tells me all he has seen have fine teeth. Since an AV is an AV I would expect that all have fine teeth as well. Good luck. Bob Ingman

So that means 3rd and 4th gear are exactly the same as the ones found in the common AT SSCs that come in Beetles. Yuck! It would have been nice to at least get coarse tooth gears.
Thanks for your help Bob.

Bruce there are still a lot of advantages to the AV trans though. Did you read them in the link I gave you? They are the best T-1 trans available. Good luck. Bob Ingman

Yes I went through that site. But an AV is exactly the same as an AT except with 4.12 R&P and larger T181 flanges. Both of which can be installed in an AT.
Now if you could find an AW Thing trans, that's the ticket!
